Error connecting to server

I get the above message when running ES.  Also when pressing F 2 key it says "Sheepserver request (failed)" and "Sheeplist (failed)".

What's wrong??

same question - different direction

hey, i have been getting the same problem but thats not my question

maybe i just don't see it in the System Preferances but , my sheep will only run for a few minutes and then the screen goes black. is that the sheep or a setting on my MAC?  i have tried messing with it but it still keeps doing it?   anyone know why?  and also F2 does not do anything when i press it

On Mac the configuration is

On Mac the configuration is accessible by clicking Options... button in Screen Saver panel in System Preferences. If you don't want that your screen goes black, go to Energy Savings preference in System Preferences and play with "Put the display(s) to sleep..." setting. Set it to "Never" if necessary. Hope this helps.

About F2. Are you running it on MacBook, MacBook Pro? You may need to press Fn key at the same time as F2 to do really F2. It depends on your settings in Keyboard preference panel.

Otherwise please tell me what is your machine and your operating system version.

Thanks

you can prevent your screen

you can prevent your screen from going black with the power settings, under system preferences.  does F1 work?  do you have Direct Draw mode on?

also

Im also just wanting to clarify, the sheep that are showing up should be breeding or whatever its called and making new sheep, right?

Same problem

I'm getting the same problem. I just downloaded the newest version of ES for Windows (2.7b18) and am using WinXP SP3, with all current patches. I use the same username and password that I am using now to post this. I received no warnings when installing and everything seems to work fine, except for the following.  When I run the the program and press F2, it says, "Server logon failed. Using free server." It seems to be downloading, but at an exceptionally slow rate--I estimate that it is downloading on the order of 200 bytes/sec.

When I click on one of the sheep thumbnails on the right, it opens the following web page:

http://v2d7c.sheepserver.net/cgi/node?id=1030

It's loading slowly now, but usually it doesn't.

The behavior of the program has been a little inconsistant. Now, when I run it, it says "Server is not known yet." Sometimes it also gives me downloading stats, in which case it looks like it is downloading on the order of 200 bytes per second.

I'm wondering if there is a problem with the server right now. The "Server Up Mostly" thread seems to have been resolved:

http://community.electricsheep.org/node/239

However several other problems that could be server related have popped up in the forum. For example:

I get the same message in the

I get the same message in the Mac client of ES using v2.7b17b.

If I enter my user ID and PW, quit System Prefs, and immediately start ES I log into the correct server. If I wait, or restart, or let it start on its own, I get the "server request failed; using free one" message. Every time.

Its been this way for me since the start of the beta program. I didn't have this problem with ElectricSheep (no space), which logged into the server just fine.

Part of the problem may be that in System Preferences (under Mac OS 10.5.x and 10.6.x) my PW isn't saved correctly. Normally its a six digit PW. If I enter it, close the prefs pane, and reopen it, the PW string is 32 characters long whether I have my user ID entered or not...

Occasionally I get an "error connecting to server" message instead.  :-(

Yes, the password gets turned

Yes, the password gets turned to 32 characters because it gets converted to MD5 digest. Unfortunately for security reasons it cannot be decrypted when displayed in the password field. Only when you change the password it gets redigested and saved. The save works correctly.

About the message, the paying server request fails at the moment, because spot is working on the functionality. The server request mechanism is under construction on the server side and when finished, the message will automagically disappear. It is a known issue and will appear for a while. No need to panic.

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks.

Ok, that makes sense.

Thanks.

Don't set your login name in the client

It's been said here before on many threads and I believe it is still the case, there is a problem with authentication - don't set your login name and password. I did this a few days ago as a test and I stopped downloading new sheep. When I went back to no user name, I resumed downloading.

Thanks a lot! I'll try that.

Thanks a lot! I'll try that. I just reinstalled ES after a long time away, and haven't been following the forum recently.

do you normally access the

do you normally access the internet through a proxy?  what happens if you click on one of the sheep thumbnails on the right side of this web page?
