Windows Client v2.7b9 Released
EDIT: This page is obsolete see the new release.
The second release of the so-new-it's-incompatible 2.7 beta client. Get the installer here. The source code can be had from SVN. See also the first beta release, including more info about what's really new.
After installation, go to your desktop properties and select "ElectricSheep_2_7b9" as your screensaver.
Reports of any problems or bugs as well as successes are most welcome. It seems to work great for most people but crashes for others. We are trying to figure out why, so if you try it, please let us know what happens good or bad. We are looking for crashes, freezes, and stutters. It would help most if you included the computer make/model, operating system version, and graphics card hardware in your report. Thanks! Your best bet is to comment on this forum, but you can also send me email.
It writes log files that might include some clues about any problems. On Vista they are in "C:\ProgramData\ElectricSheep\" and "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ElectricSheep\" on XP. Look at the end of the log file first.
You can browse the new flock here even without the client. Note that this flock is at 1/10th quality since there are hardly any users yet. I'll crank it up as people join. The advantage of few users though is it starts in seconds :) (Update 7/16/2008 the quality is now up to 500).
Changes since v2.7b8: drop "dot net" runtime to fix settings dialog, drop MSI in favor of NSIS installer, important bug fixes.
Note there is also a Linux beta.
Changing directories
I changed the sheep directory via the settings.lua to another drive on my system that I wanted to dedicate to sheep. While the screen saver created the directory structure on the new drive for me and began downloading sheep, the screen saver itself continued to stay at "Downloading the first sheep."
Now, if I put one of the sheep into the default c:\\programdata... directory it plays it, even though in settings it's pointed to H:\\Sheep\
So, the sheep download to the H: drive normally, but will only play on the C drive. What am I doing wrong?
Wow
I feel like that guy on the Maxell cassette tape commercial.
That being said, on with the squashing!

Playback is smooth usually -- some stutter at times but I attribute that to running heavy.
I can confirm the others' postings: Settings do not save nickname, I do see my votes count (even multiple ones?)
I didn't want to change too many other settings but the display page settings seem to stick.
I pressed s for stats and there is no hotkey assigned -- I am interested in knowing where the hotkey assignments are (one of the script/lua files?)
Also I did like the left arrow press to rewind, miss that.
But the resolution and flame improvements more than make up for it. This is great work shepards.

Beta 9 is working great on
Beta 9 is working great on Vista x32 here. Is there an option to run on two monitors now? I miss that feature very much.
Things seem to flow better (More smooth transitions, less sudden changes between sheep) and I have only had the new client installed for about 2 days. Great work!
So far, so good + hello
At first it occasionally would freeze-up, but I tweaked a couple of settings which seemed to help. Sorry I forget which, I'm new and just poking at it righy now. It kept running overnight (a previus beta release crashed my computer)and has been looking great ever since. The visual improvement oover 2.6 are very noticeable.
My setup:
Intel 2 Core CPU E6850 @ 3Ghz each and 3.5G of RAM.
Running XP Media Center V2005
The dual screen functionality was a real struggle, and I couldn't get it to really work. I was able to load it into a SheepWacherB window and drag it to the 2nd monitor. Not that big a deal for me; I always had to do this anyway because v2.6 would treat the dual monitors as one big one no matter how I configured things.
I use a DVI-to-HDMI cable into a HDMI port giving me (so it says) a fullscreen 1080p signal at a resolution of 1920x1080 nvidio GForce 6800GTS w/ 512K RAM card (silent version) which is good enough for me. Actually it looks fantastic. Eventually I hope to have the time to exlore its capapilities and maybe even contribute to the gene pool, but I have a lot to learn first about the app. Glad to see that others appreciate this art-tool.

Stuttering on Vista 64bit
Runs fine for a couple of minutes, but then starts to slow way down until it's pretty choppy.

Is there a solution to this, or is it a bug?
Voting Up/Down
The new beta is great! I really like the new sheep quality, it's really good.
I'm not sure voting is working, because I hit the arrows and no sheep show up... If there's logs I can post that would help, please let me know where to find them.
Voting Up/Down
I too, miss the up & down sheep. Is voting enabled, or are we just missing the visual feedback? At work I often encourage my clients to help me with a vote, and at least some have installed it themselves.
I checked the info logs, and
I checked the info logs, and votes are being listed there. I agree there should be some visual feedback of a vote, and the old way was fine.
Any update?
Has anyone been fooling around with a way to implement the vote up/down graphics? I've been wondering about it for some time but I'm basically illiterate when it comes to coding languages so I haven't done anything myself yet...
Simple question...
I haven't tried 2.7b yet (still on 2.6) but just wondered, does the "so new it's incompatible" comment above mean that the new version will not play any of the older version's sheep?
I had read that the new sheep are now 800 x 600 resolution as opposed to 640 x 480 on 2.6. So does that mean that all of my manually downloaded sheep megapacks will no longer work if I update to 2.7? Not that that's necessarily a bad thing; I'm looking forward to higher res sheep with less speckle noise. But I just want to know what to expect.
Thanks
that's right the sheep are
that's right the 2.7 sheep are not compatible because they are higher resolution and a different codec.
Thanks. Based on some of
Thanks. Based on some of the other posts here, I think I'll wait until 2.7 is out of beta before I try it.
Badness
When I first installed the 2.7b9, it worked fine, but after a week or so, I started getting a box that popped up, saying "Badness". When I look at the log file, the most recent entries are as follows:

major bug
There is one major issue for me with the new screensaver. When I try to resume computer use, the electric sheep screensaver gets stuck on one frame and won't exit. The only way around this is restarting my computer. I don't know if it's because of the hard drive being shut off from power settings or what, but it needs to be addressed.

Minor Bug (Not like last time)
Hello! One little thing: In the settings dialog, it won't save the user name I enter for the render credit. Love the piecewise linear display though! Here's my specs (in case that helps)

edit:
I found the configuration lua script, and now my username is in, it just wasn't necessarily the most user friendly operation. Still no blue screen of death this time, it just sometimes freezes on exit and you have to give it the good old Ctrl+Alt+Del. Keep up the good work!

"Badness" error
Still not working for me on windows, I was getting an opengl error with 2.7b8 (posted in other thread)
Now theres the "badness" error box, which i can only assume is the same issue as before.
Where are the logfiles stored for this release, i had a quick look under program files/ES but they werent there.

I also get the first set of errors (XP Home SP3, fairly old graphics card). ElectricSheep never actually manages to run, it just tries to and aborts.

Spot, did you change any opengl versions for 2.7? I've just found out my laptop only supports up to OpenGL 1.5
Are you using any features that were new in Opengl2.0?
2.6 worked fine, but 2.7 doesnt
Reports
The new configuration dialog box is great.
Dual screen still not working, only one screen is displaying the screensaver.
Best regards
The setting dialog works
The setting dialog works much faster now.
However, it still wont save my user name when i fill it (missing an OK button or some like that?)
For the rest, i will see tonight if it will crash or not :)
Gr, ReFa
It should save that
It should save that in:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ElectricSheep\settings\generator\generator.xml
It doesn't change that though.
If you fill it in manually (though notepad) you can change the field nickname=""
This worked in the previous version.
In either case the nickname will not show up in the settings dialogue.

It should save that
In 2.7b9, the settings are saved in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ElectricSheep\settings.lua
Change the nickname there, and it appears in the screensaver settings dialog
In my case
["nickname"]="meander",
What version is that? On my
What version is that? On my fresh install of b9, the settings must be in settings.lua
And the problem appears that the Enable rendering... checkbox is backwards. That is to say if you check it, then the screensaver runs in demo mode, and the user name and url boxes are cleared (since they wouldn't apply in demo mode?). If the box is left unchecked then it will render/generate, and the username will appear too. I've compared the logs and they confirm my suspicion. It seems the GUI is buggy or incomplete.
I checked it and its saved
I checked it and its saved in the xml file indeed.
It was a little confusing since the settingsbox didnt show the change ;)
