Port to Playstation 3 possable?

I am just curious if it's possable to port the electric sheep client to the Playstation 3. If so how hard would it be? And if it's not that hard (or even if it is but someone here has the mad skills) is anybody willing to?

What got me thinking about this was my recent upgrade from a 28" CRT TV to a brand new 47" LCD ;-).    Just imagain how cool that would look!! In addition I'd love to see a sound syncronization plugin made as these fractal animations would be even more mezmerizing if they moved, color shifted or pulsed in some fasion in time to music.

Would this help...?

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/19/sony-to-release-non-game-dev-kits-in-q... Would it be possible to make Electric Sheep react to music from CD or HDD?

While this makes sense  I

While this makes sense  I have a friend working in a well funded lab that bought many PS3's for use in a processing farm. ... I believe a beauwolf cluster.

I tried to square the two facts and found that the GPU is blocked but you can still use the SPE's for image processing or any other SMP application.

For example see http://home.mindspring.com/~eric_rollins/ray/ray.html

The question would be how to translate the code or employ a liberary to use the SPE's.

In looking into this I ran acrross disapointing news. The PS3-slim and later no longer supports linux at all.

http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html
Note in red at the top The Open Platform feature is not available for the CECH-2000 model (or later models) of the PS3™ system. The CECH-2000 is the slim PS3 and it's the only one in production / currently sold new. The sound of this statement seems to me to that they have abandoned the idea. I wonder if this was a condition of getting a better price on the processors. It would be intersting to find out.

I don't know if there is a hack yet or how you would even be able to introduce it..... the harddrive is 'upgradeable' so that seems like a pretty big 'hole' for  a hack. With the need to hack on this level if someone gets linux running I imagine that it could end up with full funtionality. Since they did not put in 'support' prehaps they also did not build in the GPU breaking part either.  So this bad news could be good news... but then thier would be at least 2 PS3 envirnoments. There is a huge installed base of older systems but if the new systems can't be used then it may not be worth the effort.

I am seriously irked by the fact that the native Sony development tools are outragounsly pricey. It would be really cool to have a native PS3 application ... anywone know if it's possilbe to write native PS3 executables with opensource tools?

A winamp plugin/interface

A winamp plugin/interface into electric sheep where the sheep could frolic and play in the visualization window?

This does sound cool ... who would need mind altering drugs then?  They'd be useless!

You know what they say about great minds....

I was recently thinking the same thing. Especially since there's a linux client for the screensaver. I've never put another OS on my ps3, but I love to just imagine the potential with the rendering power of the cell processor.

I approve of this idea! Please update us if you try anything!

the problem is that sony have

the problem is that sony have turned off the graphic cell processor when you run linux.

If they hadnt we would all be running windows on it and play pc games with crossover or wine ;)
