We lost our hosting on Friday night. I've managed to bring back the drupal (this forum) on a new home. The screensaver will continue to function, but it won't download new sheep until I find a place for sheepserver.net, the high bandwidth part that talks to all the screensavers. We were using 250mbps (88TB/month), but could make due with less, or maybe share the load among a couple of machines. If you are able to help, please let me know. Sorry for the interruption.
New Accounts
Is it now possible to activate new accounts? A friend of mine tried it some days before and it didn´t work. She just got the error report from the server but no sheep.
You should be able to create
You should be able to create accounts on the drupal here, and the screensaver should be able to download new sheep. But the screensaver can't talk to the drupal right now, so you'll get the error message about not being able to find the server, but it should work.
downloading
Still not downloading automatically, so have been doing it manually. I have had to eliminate old sheep to make room, but now find that my es is playing mostly edges, and am wondering if removing old edges messes up the system for playing sheep. Thanks for all the beauty!

Thanks to some folks at VHS and the CoralCDN you should now be getting new sheep again. The client will still report an error, but it should work anyway.

Failed login
Everytime I try to authenticate, I get a message saying it failed. If i click login again, it locks up the configuration. When I run ES, I get a message that says I'm using the free version need to login blah blah blah. I have 2.7b17 for Windows, and it just won't work. The earlier versions I try just flash a black screen and go back to my desktop. ES is my absolute favorite screen saver, and I wish it would just work for me again.

Just after posting this I decided to try it again. My ES works, but login still fails.

Thanks for the info. I thought I was just unlucky, because I had so much trouble lately when I saw that it was supposed to work.
Sheep are downloading now,
Sheep are downloading now, but they are coming over very slowly, sometimes freezing half way through downloading, and usually only a few will download, then they just stop downloading. If I restart the screensaver, a few more will come over, and I have to keep doing that.

I wondered why I kept getting that error message. Did the generous hosting provider just not realize exactly how much bandwidth they were signing up to provide? Do you have any kind of estimate on how much one average user's worth of bandwidth costs? I.e. how much will the paid version have to cost to cover its expenses?

Is anyone else having problems with the screensaver crashing since the server's been down? It seems to do it consistantly on three different Vista 64-bit systems.

I had this problem with windows XP, I solved the issue by disabling "http download" under the screensaver settings. If this is a different problem you are encountering let me know.

this fix seemed to work for me. I always wrote it off as I had SQL Server Managment Studio and Visual Studio 2005 running and it was causing toom any instances of the same process or a resource conflict or something. my local flock is growing on a side note, and I had to go into the registry to change my screensaver settings. Curse you group policy!!

On my vaio running vista ultimate it crashes after you try and login manually the second time. Everytime. Not in the desktop screensaver window but running standalone.
Torrents
I see a lot of people posting about bring torrents back, and being comapratively new to ES I wouldn't mind someone explaining how the Torrents system worked. I know how torrents work, I just seem to be missing a link between how to automate the downloading behind a program.
I would be willing to seed while my laptop is at home. It becomes problematic at work due to limited bandwidth (a T1 connection shared by over 100 people gets slowed down enough on its own). I'll look up my actual connection speeds at home and reply here.
The server generated an RSS
The server generated an RSS feed of torrents containing sheep. Users could configure Azureus (and other clients) to download them and copy them into the right location when they are finished downloading. We also had a bt client built into the screensaver, but it didn't work very well. Overall we weren't getting enough seeders to make it work.

couldn't the built in bt client be configured to automatically seed sheep? have it set with up/down limits so as to be not-obtrusive, and have a version that excluded the bt client so that those who didnt have the bandwidth wouldn't seed.

Hey, my account or Drupal authentication (someone please tell me what that is) isn't letting me log on, it always fails even tho i have an account, im sure i used my username and password correctly and i think its because i have a firewall blocking it and if thats the thing then someone please tell me how to turn it off, OR it could be the fact that im all the way down under in Australia... or the servers might just be down... i dunno but someone please help me coz ever since i've downloaded this it hasnt worked and i have the latest one...OR it could be because he said there will be no more downloads and since i havnt downloaded anything... i dunno anymore... someone please reply!

My pc just finished rendering 1 frame and then the server conection failed. Does this mean the server is slowly coming back online or was this a small test?

Been following the discussion and I had this Idea for some time just never did anything with it, as use it as a personal backup
Ever since I stated collecting sheep, they've allways on some point in time caused me HD space issues. But then Flickr came out with the option to store small film pieces (max 90sec) and If you pay the $45 a year you upload as much as you want and download in the same quality or better said the same file. Now It would require some rebuilding the distribution system. But according to the license you can upload anything that you created/and that is non offfencive./.. and I don't think Flickr any time soon has a BW problem...

Bitorrent is Good, but how about KAD?
I think Bit Torrent was a good thing, and it might be good to get the sheep kickstarted temporarily if nothing else.
However, since bit torrent may be blocked, how about obfusicated KAD (e.g. eMule connections) the ports can be randomized and can usually get right past generic firewalls which block major P2P ports? Also, KAD can work decentralized, meaning there is no need for a server once the peers get going, major "+" on bandwith.
Just a thought, and looking forward to see the sickly sheeps get healthy and hosted again. ;)

You can get some manually
If you can get to http://v2d7c.sheepserver.net/cgi/status.cgi you will see a few sheep. Click on the thumb nail image of one and it will bring you to a page with some details about that sheep. The main preview image is a link to the actual AVI for the sheep. Right click that and save it to your MPEG directory (not completely sure where yours is - mine is "E:\ElectricSheep\content\mpeg" - you can get there from the Advanced tab in the configuration window).
If you do that with a few sheep you can start our your own local flock.

the reason it isn't working is because the server is down. This is the first time I've seen this since using it, any other time it simply works with no tinkering necessary.

Hi, I'm new, but I'm registered and my email's verified and everything but everytime i try to run the screensaver it says register at electricsheep.org to download faster. But when I use the configuration to try to do the Drupal authentication and log in, it always fails. Is this still fine? will it still download the sheep eventually? It's also saying server request failed, using free one sometimes, what does this mean? Sorry for being a newb
